President Trump's approval & our view of the direction of the country

President Trump's approval & our view of the direction of the country

Bottom Line: This is a weekly story to get a reality/temperature check regarding what's really going on with public opinion of the President and our view of the direction of the country. First here's the high point, low point and current ratings for President Trump...

  • Trump's lowest ratings: 37% approval and 59% disapproval: -22% (8/4/17)
  • Trump highest approval ratings 45% approval and 43% disapproval (1/27/17): +2%
  • Trump's current ratings: 45% approval and 51% disapproval: -6%

President Trump’s net approval improved another point over a week ago. His rating has risen in 5 of the past six weeks, his overall average approval rating is tied with the highest it’s ever been. As has been the case for almost his entire presidency, Trump’s approval rating is highest with the more engaged/informed politically though the gap has narrowed considerably as we’re closing in on Election Day.

  • With adult only samples his rating over the past week averaged: 44%
  • Registered voters: 45%
  • Likely voters: 45%

For comparison's sake his approval rating is now one point higher than President Obama's average approval rating on this date in his second year in office and two points higher with likely voters.

Looking at the direction of the country this week...

Where we stood on Inauguration Day:

  • Right Direction: 30%
  • Wrong Track: 59%
  • Net: -29%

Today:

  • Right Direction: 42%
  • Wrong Track: 52%
  • Net: -10%

Change: +19% under Trump & +3% over a week ago

For the third consecutive week our collective optimism about our country his risen, as I suggested would likely be the case. We’re now back to levels we last saw prior to the Kavanaugh/Ford fiasco. The question is whether this improved optimism about the President and the direction of the country, which is back to being the highest it’s been since December of 2012, will translate on Election Day for Republicans.

Until next week...
