Today’s entry: Your story on the first dose success of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines was interesting. I’d not heard that before. I’m wondering, how many people who’ve taken the first dose of the Moderna or Pfizer aren’t going back for a second?

Bottom Line: Today’s note comes on back of my story highlighting two studies indicating the efficacy of the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine could be as high as 89% - or potentially better than even the one-dose J&J vaccine. Now, regarding how many people aren’t reporting back to receive a second dose of a Moderna or Pfizer vaccine...it’s fewer 1 in 10 who aren’t. According to the most recent report from the CDC here’s the breakdown of those who’ve received a Moderna or Pfizer vaccine:

  • 88% who’ve completed the vaccine schedule
  • 9% who are waiting for a second dose
  • 3% who’ve missed their second dose schedule

Timing matters when it comes to receiving the second dose of a COVID vaccine. The Pfizer vaccine schedule is 21 – 24 days after receiving the first dose. For the Moderna it’s days 28-31. Here’s another little nugget that’s worth noting. Though it’s not publicized, because it’s not recommended, you may still receive a second dose of either vaccine up to 42 days after the first. 95.6% all Americans who’ve received a first dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine received a second dose within 42 days.

Florida is almost exactly in line with the national average as 95.4% of Floridians have completed the two-dose schedule. There are significant variances based upon geography. For example, residents of New Hampshire have been the least likely to complete the two-dose schedule, with only 82% doing so, while Louisiana leads the country with over 98% completing the schedule. What isn’t clear is why there’s such a wide variance between the states, but as usual Florida is pretty much the barometer of the country.
