Florida COVID-19 Vaccination Rates By Age – September 8th, 2021

Bottom Line: Once COVID-19 began to surge this summer, vaccination rates followed in Florida from those who’d previously been reluctant. As cases have begun to slow down from peak levels reached in mid-August, we’re likewise seeing a lower rate of vaccinations for COVID-19. After 1.3% of our population was vaccinated two weeks ago, that number dropped to 0.8% last week. Florida’s overall vaccination rate, with at least a first dose, now stands at 64.4% of our total population (including those under 12 who aren’t eligible for a vaccination). Florida’s vaccination rate remains higher than the national average as we rank 20th overall. Here’s an updated look at vaccination rates by age:

  • Under 18: 18% (13% fully vaccinated)
  • 18-64: 70.5% (58.2% fully vaccinated)
  • Over 65: 99.9% (88.3% fully vaccinated)

Florida has the largest senior population in the county and it’s remarkable to see a 99.9% vaccination rate. Notably, over 75% of all adults are vaccinated with at least a first dose in Florida - the threshold previously been targeted for herd immunity. The FDA is studying data to make a determination about whether they’ll recommended a booster shot starting September 20th, as President Biden has previously outlined. We’ve learned that should boosters begin September 20th, the Pfizer vaccine will be ready to go – however the Moderna may be slightly delayed with no clear visibility on a booster timeline for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. In speaking with FIU’s immunologist Dr. Aileen Marty, clinical research from outside of the US suggests switching vaccines for a booster is safe, though without clinical trials in the US – a recommendation from US officials is unlikely for now.
