Florida’s Updated Voter Registration by Party – July 2023

Florida’s Updated Voter Registration by Party – July 2023

Bottom Line: The Florida Division of Elections has provided the update for all eligible voter registrations through June. The trend hasn’t been the friend of Florida’s Democrats in recent years. For the better part of twenty years Republicans steadily ate away at the voter registration advantage Florida’s Democrats had held since the onset of partisan voter record keeping in the 1970’s. By November of 2021, amid massive pandemic induced relocations, Republican voter registrations outnumbered Democrats for the first time. And every month since the GOP advantage by way of voter registration has grown. Earlier this year, Florida’s Democrats opted to head in a new direction with party leadership tapping former Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried to lead the party going forward. It’s safe to say that hasn’t turned the tide back towards Democrats in Florida. Last month Liberty County flipped to a Republican majority for the first time in its history and June didn’t bring better news for Democrats.

These are the year-to-date voter registration information:

  • DEM: -206,697 (-93,744 last month)
  • GOP: -48,853 (-48,096 last month)
  • NPA/Other: -98,897 (-100,113 last month)

The current breakout of registered voters looks like this...

  • DEM: 33.3%
  • GOP: 37.1%
  • NPA/Other: 29.6%

Voter registrations dropped significantly across the board in June as voter rolls reflected a purging of registered voters which moved out-of-state, become inactive or died. The combination of the cleaning up of voter rolls, along with the lack of a catalyst with newly relocated or age eligible voters in a non-election year, led to nearly 250k fewer voters overall. But as illustrated, the losses were far from equitable. While NPA losses were greatest – Democrats suffered one of the worst months in its history by way of voter registrations. The net result is yet another record Republican voter advantage within the state.

The Republican advantage relative to Democrats now stands at a record 541,798 voters, with a net change of 45,648 to the advantage of the GOP in June. Of Florida’s 67 counties – only 13 currently have Democrat majorities by way of voter registration. Notably, while Republicans won all but five counties last November. During the month of May, Liberty County flipped to a Republican majority for the first time in the county’s history. If current trends hold, there could be others which do the same before Election Day 2024.
