Florida News That Impacts You – August 30th, 2023

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Hurricane Idalia is set to make landfall this morning in Florida’s Big Bend as a category 4 Hurricane with top sustained winds of 130 mph. There are no significantly populated areas near the landfall of the storm. Notably, with the continued strengthening of the hurricane, it’s now expected to maintain hurricane status as it makes its way across southeastern Georgia and into South Carolina.
  • Idalia impacts throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast have been and will continue to be minimal. Winds are expected to top out at around 25 mph midday with the occasional outer band which could produce quick but heavy rainfall.
  • As we’re in the peak of hurricane season the tropics remain active with five systems including Hurricanes Idalia and Franklin – though no other systems beyond Idalia are a threat to Florida or other states.
  • The Florida Department of Agriculture has now identified a total of 17 Citgo gas stations in the state which have contaminated fuel supplies and that have been placed under a stop sale order by the state. None are in Southeast Florida or are on the Treasure Coast.
  • Gas prices were flat again on Tuesday. Statewide the average price for regular unleaded remains $3.70 per gallon – 7 cents lower than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.88 per gallon, which is the highest price in the state.
