Florida News That Impacts You – September 5th, 2023

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Florida’s Congressional Map, which was in place for last year’s midterm elections, has been ruled unconstitutional and must be redrawn according to a state Circuit Judge’s ruling. The judge found in favor of numerous groups challenging the map’s constitutionality after the redrawing of a majority Black district in North Florida. The judge sent the map back to the state legislature with instructions to follow Florida’s Constitution in the redrawing of the district. In addition to the state challenge – federal challenges to the map remain with similar concerns.
  • Anti-semitic flyers were left in several communities in multiple counties on Monday. Locally, in Wellington, flyers were dropped at homes in the Emerald Forest, Sugar Pond Manor and Pinewood Manor neighborhoods. PBSO is investigating the materials and encourages anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.
  • Power restoration in Idalia impacted areas now exceeds 96% of those knocked offline during the impact of the hurricane. Only 21,000 power outages remained statewide as of this morning.
  • Farm Share is hosting a free food distribution at the Wells Recreation Center in Riviera Beach at 9 this morning. The food distribution, for those in need, will include fresh produce and non-perishable canned goods. The event is drive-thru only, and vehicles should contain a trunk or cargo bed. The event will last while supplies last on a first-come, first-served basis.
