  • Two disturbances remain active in the tropics. A disturbance in the Caribean Sea currently has a 50% chance of developing into a tropical depression by the end of the week. The system is expected to drift northeast towards Cuba and Hispaniola. A second disturbance has formed off of the east coast of Florida and is expected to drift slowly towards the northeast and away from us. It only has a 10% chance of developing; however the disturbance will continue to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to Florida’s east coast today. A wind advisory has been issued with sustained winds between 25 to 40 mph possible and gusts of up to 60 mph for coastal Palm Beach County.   • Broward County Schools are closed today due to flooding issues throughout the county. The County also canceled all school related events and activities today. All other school districts are regularly scheduled today. 
  • The Palm Beach County School District has contracted with Atlanta based National Glazing Solutions on a contract to pay up to $4 million per year to provide what the district calls “safety and security window film” to windows in schools which don’t already have impact windows. The window film has been applied in five other school districts within the state preceding the decision by the Palm Beach County School District. Concerns have been raised by a local vendor over the bidding process for the project. 
  • Three members of a drug trafficking ring in Indian River County have been sentenced following a federal investigation by the DEA in conjunction with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation, which began in June of last year, included undercover agents purchasing narcotics, commonly meth, and cocaine, leading to the arrests of three local residents who participated in the ring. Each pled guilty and will serve between 5 to 8.5 years.  
  • Gas prices have hit a new low for the year for a third straight day dropping three cents a gallon. Statewide the average price for regular unleaded is $3.10 per gallon – 14 cents lower than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.32 per gallon and in Indian River County the average is $3.12 per gallon.
