iPhone 5 sold out - want one?  Here's what to do:

http://www.nasdaq.com/article/apple-iphone-5-sold-out-sales-breach-5-mln-mark-in-three-days-20120924-00630

Bottom Line:  So Apple has announced that they’ve sold out of all manufactured 5’s for the launch.  While they’re moving a quickly as possible to make more to sell more before you decide a Droid is for you instead – there really isn’t anyway to be certain where and when you can buy one.  If you pre-order right now it’s likely that you’ll not get yours for a minimum of two weeks and likely longer.  I do have some info that’s helpful to you getting yours quicker though:

  1. Determine what service provider you want to use.  5’s are available for Verizon, AT&T & Sprint.  If you don’t care what network it’s on you’ll increase your reach of possibilities.
  2. Determine what model you want 16GB, 32GB or 64GB.  The biggest shortages are with the 16GB model (least expensive model), so if you target a more expensive 32 or 64 you have a better chance of getting one quicker.
  3. Identify a few locations that are convenient for you to buy the phone (could be a traditional retailer that sells them, a service provider or even an Apple store).  Call them each morning to see if they have any or if they’re expecting any that day.  Often the stores themselves don’t know they’re getting any until the day they arrive.
  4. Offer me a substantial sum for mine if all else fails.  Kidding (mostly).

What does the NFL have in common with the Lingerie Football League (aside from a football):

http://deadspin.com/5946112/

Bottom Line:  So if you watched Monday Night Football (or just saw the highlights this morning like me) you witnessed what may be the worst regular season call in NFL history to end the game.  In a season that has been riddled with questionable officiating, via replacement officials thus far, an exclamation point was marked last night.  Green Bay was robbed of a 12-7, losing 13-12 to Seattle as a Hail Mary on the final play of the game was caught by the defender and credited to Seattle for the game winner.  But that’s not why I’m putting this on my Cheat Sheet today.  Every sports media outlet in this country is running with that story.

If you wondered (and I know many have) just where all of the replacement refs came from, there isn’t one answer.  They’ve come from college, defunct professional leagues and yes the Lingerie League.  No really.  But wait there’s more.  According to the commish of the Lingerie League it didn’t lose existing refs to the NFL, there are current NFL refs that were fired from the Lingerie League for poor performance!  Suddenly it is becoming a lot more clear just how much of a joke this current situation is.  It’s rare that you’ll find me siding with labor unions (and I’m not entirely in this situation either) but when you’ve got any number of fans watching games on their couch that may be more qualified to officiate the game then some fired Lingerie Football Leaguers you’ve got a serious problem.

EBay hits the 100 million mobile mark, what's your mobile strategy?:

http://allthingsd.com/20120924/ebays-mobile-momentum-100m-app-downloads-100m-items-listed/?reflink=ATD_yahoo_ticker

Bottom Line:  Earlier this year EBay indicated that by the end of the year more than 30% of all e-commerce takes place on mobile devices.  Yesterday they hit their own milestone.  100 million active mobile users.

In fact there are now times when more EBay activity is taking place on mobile devices then on traditional computers.  It’s yet another reminder to revisit our mobile plan.  Or for many to start building one.

  1. Do you have an actual mobile strategy for your business?
  2. Do you know what your website looks like on a smart phone?  On a tablet?
  3. Do you have key info easily viewable from a mobile device (like phone number when people look you up on the go).

Those are just a few of the questions to begin asking yourself on the way to building a mobile business plan.  From there I recommend setting up and evaluation with the Web Success Agency (sponsor of the Cheat Sheet) if you don’t know how to get from here to there.  If you ignore the mobile phenomenon it won’t go away (but much lost business for your company will).

Siri is getting weather confused so get a second opinion:

http://www.bgr.com/2012/09/24/siri-weather-forecast-mistakes-new-york/

Bottom Line:  Siri was one feature of the iPhone 4S that needed to improve with the 5.  So far it’s not off to a good start.  Apparently they reconfigured Siri and now she’s confused in providing weather information between cities with the same name.  You know like New York…  You’d think that Siri would error on the side of the city with millions rather than a small town in Texas but that’s not the case.  Folks in NYC are being given weather info for the small Texas town with temps that are about 20 degrees higher right now.

It’s not a huge issue but in the super competitive world of mobile devices Apple needs to be careful not to have too many hiccups.

Have a wiz-kid?  Google to start new code contest for young developers in November:

http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/24/code-in-contest-for-high-school-students/

Bottom Line:  This is cool It’s Google’s third “Code-in-Contest” which invites whiz kid 13-17 year olds to compete in 5 areas of code, research and program creation.  If you’re kid is brilliant with this type of stuff there is a good prize and likely a good career with Google ahead of them.  It starts Nov. 26th.  For complete info click the link above.
