Today’s question from a listener:  Michigan’s – “Right to work” bill:

Bottom Line:  Today’s question comes from an individual who actually worked in the automotive industry and was forced to join the UAW.  He expressed that had he been given the choice he wouldn’t have become a UAW member.  So let’s take a look at this issue.  Is it good policy to enable employees the ability to choose if they want to join a union?

First let’s talk about principal:

  • If the United States is a free country shouldn’t you have the right to choose if you want to be a member of a union rather than being forced into it?
  • If the union environment is a better deal employees what’s the big deal?  Wouldn’t employees choose to join unions without coercion?

Now let’s address the key argument by the unions for their opposition to this legislation:

  • All employees benefit from the involvement of the unions
  • Because all employees derive benefit (according to them) from unions shouldn’t all employees be forced to pay for the efforts?

So now I’ll talk from the point of view as a former business owner:

  • As a business owner I want to have great people and have good relationships with them.  Unions have a vested interest in there being a divide between employers and employees (or else they wouldn’t be needed)
  • Because of the arbitration process and red tape associated with most union employees – it’s a disincentive to hire and to take risk to expand a business because if you need to change strategies or lay people off – it’s difficult and expensive

Now why Michigan is passing this law (and joining 23 other states):

  • To encourage existing companies to stay in Michigan and consider expanding
  • To attract business from states and/or even other countries

And final food for thought:

  • The Economic Policy Institute has found that non-union employees in like work situations actually earn $1500 more on average than their unionized colleges

Perhaps that more than any other reason is why less than 10% of the population is unionized.

Washington issues are the biggest threat to country:

Bottom Line:  It’s easy to blame the Government for your problems.  Most of the time I’d implore you to control what you can control and move forward regardless of what pinheads in Washington do.  This time it’s different.  Economists agree.

The top two issues with our economy by the 48 top economists are both the result of the Federal Government:

  • 34% say the fiscal cliff is the biggest detriment to the economy
  • 33% say it’s the existing policy

Then for a change of pace…  The third biggest issue facing the economy is…

  • 11% Other failed Government policy (The Euro debt crisis)

Imagine if we didn’t have to worry about and suffer under failed / poor Government policy…

This is also consistent with the IMF’s findings earlier this year that identified our debt as the biggest risk to US national security (International terrorism was 2nd).

How close are you to being finished with Christmas shopping?:

Bottom Line:  Once again I find myself in the minority.  If you haven’t completed your Christmas shopping your certainly not alone.  Only 18% of us have completed our shopping at this point in the season (I finished last weekend).  More importantly if you have a business consider this…

Most big purchases have been made or decided upon at this point.  People are looking for items to complete their list.  If you have a business try to target that mindset.  Tell your customers how they can finish the list with what you have to offer.

The biggest mistake that many small businesses make is the mindset that if they’re not in traditional retail they can’t participate.  Be creative and target customers who are looking for creative answers.

Surface tablet being sold in more places:

Bottom Line:  If you’ve wanted to see & touch the Microsoft surface tablet before making the purchase – today is your day.  Staples is now stocking the Surface tablet.  It looks like other retailers will soon add the tablet to its inventory as well.

One of Microsoft’s biggest issues with the Surface has been a lack of distribution – it looks like they’ve found some answers.  Now we’ll see if we really want this tablet.
