There are ways to thwart date rape.
Let's take a look:
On college campuses, in clubs and in other social settings, date rape has been a problem law enforcement has been trying to solve and even prevent. Many times, women are given common date rape drugs like GHB and "roofies." They're tasteless and odorless and just go undetected when slipped into someone's drink. The victims can become incoherent or even unconscious. Sometimes just the over consumption of alcohol will become the problem.
When it comes to too much booze, the woman can have direct control over that by limiting how much she drinks, but when a drug is slipped into the drink and she's not aware, there isn't a whole lot she can do.
The advice has always been never to accept a drink from a stranger or leave drinks unattended. Another good piece of advice is to always be with someone you know in these settings so they can keep an eye out for something that looks troublesome, like odd behavior on the victim's part.
But what about those date rape drugs? Are there ways to thwart them? Yes it appears.
Drink Savvy is a Boston-based company that's created a material that changes in color when it comes in contact with a drug-spiked drink. Mike Abramson is the company's founder. He hopes to create a set of products made of this material from drink cups to glassware, stirrers and straws. The company's trying to raise money to make the products.
Last year, Israeli scientists announced the development of a sensor that looks like a straw or stirrer that can detect two of the most commonly used drugs with 100% accuracy.
I'm happy to see the newest company with a potential product line and even happier that there's already something out there coming from Israel. So yes there are ways.
