Florida Power & Light Co. customers in Palm Beach County will be able to weigh in on the company's proposed $690.4 million base rate increase. Dozens are expected to come to the Solid Waste Authority at 7501 N. Jog Road in West Palm Beach to voice their thoughts on FPL's plans to increase utility rates for its customers.
The rate hike is a base rate increase of $7.09 per month for the typical customer, but much of it would be offset by lower fuel costs. FPL predicts bills will only increase by $1.41 per month for the average customer.
FPL says its customers already pay about $350 less a year than other Florida utility customers. The Public Service Commission, the state agency that regulates utilities, approved a $2.20 rate increase last year.
At Thursday's public hearing, at least three commissioners from the public service commission will be there as well as FPL representatives.
The Public Service Commission is scheduled to make their final decision on the potential rate increase by November.
