Area in the running to host its 11th Superbowl.

Another Superbowl could be coming to South florida in a few years. Sun Life Stadium is one of the favorites to host Superbowl 50 in 2016. The announcement made Tuesday at the NFL fall meetings in Chicago.

South Florida is competing with San Francisco as the two finalists. It would be the eleventh Superbowl hosted by Miami. One factor that could work against South Florida's bid is the fact that San Francisco is building a new stadium in Santa Clara California, for the 49ers which will open in 2014.

The last time South Florida was considered a serious contender to host a Superbowl was three years ago when the selection for the 2013 Superbowl was awarded to New Orleans. At that announcement, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodwell had said unless serious upgrades were made to the Dolphins home stadium, the area would not be considered to host the biggest game of the NFL season.

Upgrades that were said to be needed to Sun Life Stadium included a canopy to cover fans from rain, lighting system that would be up to standard for a high definition broadcast, new video board and sound system, and a reconfiguration of lower bowl seating areas that would bring the seats 18 feet closer to the field.

The winning stadium will be announced at the NFL spring meetings in May. The city losing the bid for the 2016 game will automatically go up against the city of Houston to see who will host the 2017 Superbowl.
