Officials say strong winds from Hurricane Sandy played a big role in a plane making an emergency landing at Palm Beach International Airport Thursday night.

54 passengers on Spirit Airlines Flight 946 were headed from Colombia to Fort Lauderdale.

They had gotten close to West Palm Beach when the captain and crew began to alert those on board that there was a problem with the throttle.  The airline says that one of the engines had suddenly stopped working and with only one engine, the pilots were unable to land in Fort Lauderdale because of wind gusts.

The airplane touched down on the tarmac at PBIA around 5:30pm, with fire trucks and law enforcement standing by.  Winds were calmer there.  No injuries reported and the passengers were shuttled by bus to Fort Lauderdale.
