If it seems like every charity in the world is asking for money, it's not your imagination. They get about 40 percent of their donations between Thanksgiving and New Years.
Many charities are legit, but there are always some con artists in the mix, and some of the "legitimate" charities spend most of their money on overhead and fundraising, according to Florida Agriculture Commissioner and lead consumer advocate Adam Putnam.
To make sure you get the most bang for your charity buck, Putnam says you should check out his gift giver's guide before you make a donation.
