Overcrowded animal shelter offering adoption certificates

Audio: PBC Animal Care and Control

Pets can make a great gift for the holidays, but if you're unsure how your child may react to having a new furry friend in the house, there is a short-term option you may want to consider first.

The Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control pet shelter is offering an adoption certificate allowing potential customers to visit the shelter first before making a decision.

The shelter has been experiencing overcrowding, as more families find themselves lacking the funding to take care of their pets. They say financial strains brought about by the recent economic downturn has played a part in this.

Elizabeth Harfmann, pet shelter said famlies generally help out until animals get over a cold or hold onto a cat or dog until they gain weight to where they are eligible for adoption. It also helps the shelter with their overcrowding issues.  Harfmann tells us they are taking in 40 to 50 animals per day.

The shelter is located on Belvedere Road, West of the Turnpike. Click here to find out more about fostering a pet.
