Newly filed campaign reports show the local Democrats won, even though their donations were way fewer than those of the Republican candidates.
Florida Republicans continue to outraise the state's Democrats despite Democratic success at the polls.
Campaign reports filed on Thursday showed that the Republican Party of Florida raised nearly $2.2 million in cash donations, while the Florida Democratic Party took in just over $424,000. The reports cover money taken in by the parties from Nov. 2 until Dec. 31.
A large amount donated to Republicans came from GOP elected officials. House Speaker Will Weatherford steered $640,000 from a political committee he controls, while Senate President Don Gaetz donated $70,000 from his re-election account.
Some of the major donors to the parties include companies such as Disney, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida and Florida Power & Light. Private prison vendor The GEO Group donated more than $50,000 to Republicans.
