Whole Foods shoppers may have purchased the potentially infected fish.
If you shop at Whole Foods Market, there's a voluntary recall underway.
The product is the 4 ounce package of Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon, cold-smoked and sliced. A sample tested positive for the bacteria known as listeria.
According to Consumer Reports, in healthy individuals, Listeria can cause short term symptoms, including high fever, severe headaches, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
But it can cause a sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
The recalled items were sold in 12 states including Florida, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Full refunds will be given at the stores.
