Longtime local film critic Hap Erstein gives us his take on the newest films.
What appears to be, by the previews, a very funny R-rated comedy is open at theaters. It's from the same director as the movie "Horrible Bosses" from two years ago. Rooney Mara is back after her critically-acclaimed performance as "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" in a film about the potential side effects of drugs we use to calm ourselves down. Hap Erstein with PalmBeachArtsPaper.com reviews the latest movies.
"Identity Thief" - A guy with a girl's name (Sandy) has his I.D. stolen by a woman across the country from him. He travels from Colorado to Florida to track her down and the laughter ensues from there. Hap praises the comedic talents of Melissa McCarthy and says she and Jason Bateman play well off eachother.
"Side Effects" - Rooney Mara, who made a name for herself in the film "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" stars in a film with Channing Tatum as a couple who experience unexpected side effects from a drug that is intended to calm anxiety. Jude Law and Catherine Zeta Jones play big roles in this thriller. Hap recommends it. "It's not a great movie, but it's really interesting and some great twists. That's all you need."
"Top Gun" - The original film starring Tom Cruise has been re-released in 3D and it's on IMAX screens where available.
