Longtime local film critic Hap Erstein makes some Oscar picks and tells us what's playing now.
The Oscars are Sunday night. That's right, no reason to call them their full name "The Academy Awards". That's because the producers of the show have decided, somewhat last minute, to cut down the name to simply "The Oscars", to make it sound fresh for the younger viewers.

"Snitch" - Dwayne Johnson (the actor formerly known as "The Rock") plays a man who tries to save his son. Hap says even Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon can't save this film.
"West of Memphis" - A documentary getting some commercial success, likely because of the cooperation from "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson.
"Dark Skies" - A sci-fi/suspense/thriller (triple threat) from the folks that brought you "Paranormal Activity".

"Bless Me Ultima" - A film that's based on a novel full of magic realism, set near the end of World War II in New Mexico.
